Where is the sun?
Despite the lights and fireworks symbolizing the start of a new year, January can be a difficult month for many of us.
With the start of the new year comes the end of the holiday season, the impacts of holiday spending, the return to our work or school routine, and a continuation of the dark, damp weather.
We wake up in the dark and for many leave work in the dark. If you're like me it's hard to remember when was the last time I saw the sun.
January can also bring with it the added pressure of new year’s resolutions, attempts to start the year off “on the right foot”, and goals of becoming our “best selves”.
New year’s resolutions can be a great way to make positive, lasting changes, but despite our best intentions, it can be hard to make them stick.
Some of the reasons your resolutions can fall flat are:
You’re trying to change too much too quickly
When we try to make too many changes at the same time, it can be easy to make ourselves overwhelmed in the process.
You’re running before you learn how to walk
Small steps towards our goals can be just as impactful as huge strides, and more sustainable too. Start with smaller, more manageable goals.
You’re resolution was made for the wrong reason
Developing resolutions should not be a punitive task; Instead, we should be making goals as a hope of bettering ourselves from a growth perspective, rather than punishing ourselves for our failings. Try to develop goals from a place of growth and self-love.
Ask yourself:
What habits do I currently have but would like to change?
Do these habits align with who I am and who I want to become?
What habits do I want to develop?
As you enter the new year, I want you to know we are here to help you process some of the emotions that come up post-holiday. We also want to help you proactively tackle some of the impacts of this cold and gray weather.
I hope this new year brings you health and happiness, and we look forward to connecting with you.
Wishing you wellness,
Rotem
